The Brief: Challenges the ‘cool’ lifestyle image of e-cigarettes and prevents the normalization of using e-cigarettes among young people.
E-cigarette use has seen a significant increase, especially among young adults. According to the ‘2023 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, 2024)’, the usage rates for both vaping and heated tobacco products (HTP) among young adults (ages 19-29) have shown a consistent rise since the COVID-19 pandemic and are notably higher than those in other age groups. Due to a low or incorrect understanding of the health risks of e-cigarettes compared to traditional cigarettes, a more permissive social perception has been fostered for their use, such as indoor smoking and secondhand exposure.
